Hydrolysis occurs when the polyurethane used in the soling material is made up of thousands of air bubbles - this gives it the soft, cushioned feeling underfoot. When the footwear is not worn for a considerable length of time, moisture builds up within the air pockets and causes the gradual breakdown of the sole. This is why we provide the care instructions on the swing tags attached to the footwear advising to wear the footwear on a regular basis. This does not occur when the boots are worn regularly as the moisture is pushed out of the air pockets.
Please note, hydrolysis only occurs when the footwear has been stored for a long period of time contrary to the care instructions provided.
The soles are applied using a direct liquid injection of the PU into a mould which is then applied to the leather upper. This creates the softness underfoot but means the footwear cannot be resoled successfully.
If you store your footwear for long periods between wearing, I would suggest you try an alternative soling material such as TPU which is featured in our 550 series. The TPU sole provides excellent slip and cut resistance, offers supreme cushioning and in highly resistant to hydrolysis and microbial attack.
